Instrumental Analytics & Machine Learning

Prof. Weller is head of the department "Instrumental Analytics" in the Faculty of Biotechnology, where he focuses on the topic of "Analytical Data Science".

The main fields of application are authenticity and quality analysis of food, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides, supported by machine learning (ML) techniques. Since his appointment as a full professor, Prof. Weller has consistently expanded his research areas, including origin and authenticity analysis of food as well as the development of ML techniques for the analysis of complex analytical data, and has applied them in numerous projects (ZIM / BMWi). Especially GC-IMS has been successfully optimized as a technique for food authentication and the development of tools for data analysis and data fusion of high-dimensional analytical data was significantly driven forward[1].

He heads the Competency Center for Chemometrics and Data Analysis CHARISMA at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, which is an interfaculty institution focusing on concepts and applications of ML and deep learning (DL). Furthermore, he is head of the Chemometrics and Data Analysis Working Group of the Food Chemistry Division (LChG) of the German Chemical Society (GdCh). He has already published several papers on the use of IMS and spectroscopic methods in the field of "Food Fraud"[2],[3], as well as on data analysis using ML [4]. Prof. Weller supervises four cooperative PhDs in this field, among others in the FH Impuls projects "M2Aind" and "M2Aind#2".
